Volleyball: Teams and players to watch – The Oregonian

Sam Naffziger is a junior at Summit and is going to be a big part of what Summit hopes is a run at the Class 5A boys cross country state title. Naffziger’s sixth place finish at the Pre-District meet put him as the No. 2 Summit runner and the 4th fastest in league. He answered a few questions for Central Oregon Athlete.
Central Oregon Athlete – How long have you lived in Bend?
Sam Naffziger – I have lived in bend for about 14 years.
COA – How long have you been running competitively?
SN – I started running competitvely when i was 8 or 9.
COA – What got you into racing?
SN – I would always go watch my grandpa run, what really got convinced to race was when I went and watched my grandpa finish the western states 100 mile run.
COA – What is your favorite part of running XC?
SN – Every thing is fun about XC, the bus rides are a lot of fun as well as the races.
COA – Do you play any sports other than XC?
SN – Right now i just do XC and track but i have probably played just about every sport.
COA – What do you like to do when you aren’t playing sports?
SN – I really like to travel and hang out with my friends.
COA – What are your goals for this XC season?
SN – My goal is for the boys team to win state.
COA – What is your favorite workout in Central Oregon?
SN – My favorite workout would either have to be going 1000 repeats in juniper park or runnning the green lakes trail.
Career highlights:
(District placing, State placing, PR)

Megan and her twin sister Sara Fristoe have had pretty amazing freshman and sophomore years at Summit high school. The girls have not only run varsity in their first-two seasons, but they led have led the Storm to two-straight state team championships.
Megan is the reining Class 5A individual state XC champion and she answered a few questions for Central Oregon Athlete:
Central Oregon Athlete – How long have you been running competitively?
Megan Fristoe – I have been running competitively since 8th grade, which is when I first started to run.
COA – What got you into racing?
MF – In 8th grade I moved from California to Bend. I went out for the cross country team only to make friends. But Dave Clark saw my potential and he was the one that really encouraged me to run and race competitively.
COA – What is it like having your twin on the team?
MF – Having Sara (my twin) on the team is a blessing and a curse. We are best friends so it is aways great to have her with me, but it does get hard always competing against each other, even though we are on the same team, we both want to be the best we can be so it gets competitive.
COA – Has anyone ever joked with you about each running half a race (which I’m not saying you should do)?
MF – Yes. People have joked about us switching places. Since we are identical twins, I don’t think it would be that hard to, but we would never have enough guts to do it. Though it would be funny.
COA – At what point in the race did you think you were going to win the state XC race last year?
MF – Going into the state xc race last year I was pretty confident that I could win the race. But with about 1,500m to go, a person was talking to the runner behind me and said to her, ” she’s dying, take the lead, she’s hurting!” and I remember saying to myself “no I’m not” and at that point I took off and I knew I had what it takes to win the race.
COA – Has being the reigning state champion changed your training or focus at all?
MF – If it has changed anything, it would be the intensity of my workouts. I know that I can push myself beyond what I think I can do, and I am a more focused and serious runner now because of it.
COA – What other sports do you enjoy?
MF – Besides running, I love to ski, downhill and nordic. I also enjoy windsurfing and paddle boarding. I have recently taken a few Pilates classes which I enjoy doing.
COA – What do you like to do when you aren’t running?
MF – When I am not running I love to spend time with my friends and family. I love reading, backpacking, hiking and doing other outdoor activities.
COA – What is your favorite workout in Central Oregon?
MF – My favorite workout would have to be mile repeats at Drake Park. I usually do four of them faster than race pace and it is a really great workout.
COA – Anything else to add?
MF – I just want to say that I am really thankful for having such a great, supportive team and coach. It is a blessing.
Megan Fristoe’s career so far:
(Year – State place, District place, PR)
2009 – 1st, 1st, 18:21
2008 – 4th, 2nd, 18:42
Bend’s Summit high school is the heavy favorite to repeat as the Class 5A girls state champions in Oregon prep cross country in 2010. While the Storm should lead the team race and have the returning individual state champion (junior Megan Fristoe), they won’t be the only fast group in Bend! Mountain View has several of the fastest girls in the state and sophomore Jenna Mattox of Bend is one of the state’s elite. Mountain View’s Jessica Wolfe was beaten only by Fristoe at the state meet, so look for lots of fast times in the newly formed 5A Special District 1 with Ashland, Bend, Eagle Point, Mountain View and Summit.

Mountain View topped Summit 58-46 in the Intermountain Conference game @ Mountain View High School Tuesday night. It was just a two-point game @ half time.

Mountain View 10-1 – 30 points by Seth Brent in big win over Madras moved the Cougars to a 6-game win streak. They are 20-1 overall.
The Dalles-Wahtonka 8-3 – Has lost a game to MV, Summit and Hermiston. But also gave MV it’s only loss of the year.
Pendleton 6-4 – Impressive 15-5 overall record.
Summit 6-4 – Last two games have gone into overtime, 3 of last 5 have gone to overtime.
Madras 5-6 - Despite losing to MV by 11, the White Buffaloes are playing well.
Bend 4-7 – Has lost 3 games in a row. Needs to win out to finish league at 7-7.
Hermiston 3-7 – Tied for the second leading scoring team in the IMC.
Crook County 0-10 – Next year’s move to 4A could be a big boost for the Cowboys.
Today’s games:
Crook County @ HERMISTON 12:45pm – Hermiston needs to bounce back to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Summit @ PENDLETON 12:45pm – The winner takes sole possession of third place.

The last time I went to a Summit basketball game, they beat Bend High in overtime. I went to Friday’s game as the Storm hosted Madras and it was again an exciting overtime game… but this time Summit didn’t come out on top. The White Buffaloes rallied late to send the game to overtime and then pulled away in the extra period to top Summit 72-65.
Austin Say hit some clutch free throws for Madras and Ahern hit a big three to send the game to overtime.
