Sixteen of the best girls tennis teams in Oregon square off in Bend Invitational Friday & Saturday.

This weekend 16 girls high school tennis teams will take place in the Bend Invitational tournament. To give you an idea how big this tournament is, those 16 teams are made up of 192 varsity players. In comparison, the Class 6A state tournament has 72 players, Class 5A has 60 and Class 4A/3A/2A/1A has 60. Meaning the Bend invite has just as many players participating in this two-day tournament as all three girls state tournaments combined.The beauty of this format is that it is a 16-team dual-match bracket… think March Madness starting out in the Sweet 16 with consolation brackets so every team plays at least three matches with many team playing four matches in two days.

I for one would love to see the high school season adopt this format to determine the best prep team in the state. While I love the current district and state tournaments that the OSAA supports, this would really show who the best team was. It could be done in addition to an individual tournament, which is the format we use now.

2011 Tournament story.

The Jesuit Tournament features 8 of the best boys high school tennis teams in Oregon. The Crusaders of Portland’s Jesuit high school have dominated the tournament with talent and depth and should be the favorite again this year.

The tournament is a vital for seeding the state tennis tournament and this year’s No. 1 singles draw should be stacked! With players like Paxton Deuel of Summit, Brent Chin of Grant, Nick Biggi of Jesuit, Scott Goldner of Lake Oswego, Goutham Sundaram of Lincoln and Ian Risenhoover of West Linn.

Spring sports are in full swing in Central Oregon and the biggest competition so far has been the weather. Bend schools have had lots of success in recent years in track, golf and tennis, winning numerous state titles. That trend looks like it should be continuing in 2012.

Something amazing about the spring prep season is just how many athletes participate in sports. Between baseball, softball, track, golf, tennis, lacrosse and ultimate frisbee, athletes have a lot of options. Numbers are huge on some of those teams, like the army that is Summit track.

Summit is having an amazing year and leads the 5A Classification of the Oregon Cup, with the winter standings just released. The Oregonian Cup is used by the OSAA, measuring a team’s academics, activities, athletics and sportsmanship. Summit has a score of 2,210 points, which is the highest of any classification.
