Abe Lodwick “unsung hero” for Washington State basketball

    COA,Feature — Tags: , , , , , , — Josh Cordell @ 11:52 am

The first time I saw Abe Lodwick play basketball I was refereeing his game and he was in about fourth or fifth grade. He was good! He went on to be the best high school basketball player to play at any of the Bend high schools (he was a star at Mountain View) and now is a big part of the Washington State’s 11-8 basketball team. Here’s a story about their sweep of Stanford and Cal this past weekend.

Boys basketball has balance in Central Oregon

It’s a balanced year in Central Oregon for boys basketball. The only teams to go undefeated in games against local teams are Sisters (4-0) and La Pine (1-0). When Ridgeview joins the picture for the 2012-13 school year, a CO boys basketball league could be very interesting! Here’s how it’s gone locally so far this season:

    6A Redmond 7-5
    • Beat Bend 76-54
    • Beat Summit 59-54

    6 Summit Volleyball
    5 Crook County Volleyball

Central Oregon prep league would cut down on travel

    COA,Feature — Tags: , , , , , , , — Josh Cordell @ 11:31 am

With the addition of Redmond’s new Ridgeview high school and Redmond high moving from 6A to 5A, a Central Oregon league in 2011-2012 will mean less travel. But it won’t fix the “special district” problem for “individual sports.”

    2011-2012 Central Oregon Teams
    5A
    Bend
    Mountain View
    Redmond
    Summit
    4A
    Crook County
    La Pine
    Madras
    Ridgeview (new Redmond school)
    Sisters

This is ideal for basketball, where a nine-team league gives each school a 16-game regular season. In football you could have a 5A and a 4A division. Baseball, softball and soccer could play one or two games against each opponent and have a nice schedule.

Sports that rely on a district meet to qualify for state like tennis, golf, wrestling, cross country and track will be affected in different ways by the new league. A sport like cross county doesn’t have to change anything, as it’s not important that teams meet before districts. Tennis is a different scenario where teams do need to face each other in “dual matches” before a district competition (at least that’s what most teams believe). This means that either CO would have a 4-team tennis district tournament or more likely play a district tourney with teams on the Columbia, therefore having to schedule matches with them as well.

No matter how it all shakes out, a Central Oregon league would be great for players, coaches, fans and Central Oregon in general! Less travel and less money spent on athletics.
