The family of the late Art Skipper Jr., former National Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year and NCAA champion javelin thrower, helped surprise Sam Crouser of Gresham, Oregon with the 2009-10 Gatorade National Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year award today.
The Gatorade Player of the Year program is celebrating its 25th year in recognizing elite high school athletes throughout the nation.
Tommy and Scott Skipper, who participated in the surprise announcement in honor of their late brother Art, surprised Sam with this year’s award during his track practice at Gresham High School. A picture of Tommy and Scott surprising Sam with the award is attached – let me know if you would like additional shots and I can send those over.
Sam, a 6-foot-5 1/2 senior, shattered the national high school and American junior record in the javelin this past season by nearly 14 feet with a throw of 255 feet, 4 inches at the Portland Track Festival earlier this month, eclipsing the 22-year-old previous record. The only boys prep track and field athlete to set a national mark this year, Sam also swept all three throwing events at Oregon’s Class 6A state meet, becoming the second prep boy in state history to earn that triple. His uncle, former two-time U.S. Olympian Brian Crouser, was the other, in 1980.
In celebration of the larger 25th anniversary, Gatorade is hosting an online poll, which will allow you to decide the greatest boys track & field athlete of all time. You can cast your vote for your favorite athlete of all-time once per day at http://playeroftheyear.gatorade.com/25th/vote/.
