Things just got crazy in Oregon’s Class 6A Metro league! The addition of Lincoln high school makes the 2010-2011 girls district tennis tournament, well, crazy! Take a look at these two returning player stats:
• 5 of 8 state quarterfinalist (and 3 of 4 semifinalists) in singles return to the Metro League. That means if those players all played singles, a quarterfinalist wouldn’t even qualify for the state tournament.
• Returning state qualifiers (singles – 6, doubles – 9) That’s a total of 15 returning state qualifiers, with only 12 possible qualifiers. At least three players who made it to state last year, and like did quite well, won’t be playing at state.
That’s assuming that the girls who played high school tennis last year are going to again this year.
Here’s a look at who should be back and how they did last year @ State:
• Sophia Bott, 11, Southridge – reigning state singles champion
• Audrew Farr, 12, Southridge – 3rd place singles
• Arianna Fardanesh, 10, Lincoln – 4th place singes
• Allie Hueffner, 10, Lincoln – quarterfinals singles
• Kadie Hueffner, 10, Lincolnd – quarterfinals singles
• Lindsey Yeom, 11, Sunset – consolation singles semifinals
• Sanij Rao, 12, Jesuit – 3rd place doubles
• Hanna Ott, 11, Southridge – quarterfinals doubles
• Connie Cai, 12, Sunset – quarterfinals doubles
• Nicole Nagel, 11, Sunset – quarterfinals doubles
(That’s just 10 of 15, but how is that for a district tournament?)

The OSAA has laid out a proposal for how to handle individual/team sports for high school teams in Oregon.
The sports effected by the changes will be cross country, wrestling, tennis and golf. Right now they are looking at moving to “regional” meets rather than “district” meets.
Here’s the article I wrote for the Salem Statesman Journal on the Central Valley Conference district wrestling tournament.
