  • Summit XC is amazing!

    COA,Feature — Tags: , , , , , , — Josh Cordell @ 1:36 pm

The Summit Storm cross country team looks like they aren’t just good, they are special! Here are some of the amazing numbers:

    • 15:06 - Travis Neuman’s time in the Harrier Classic. This may be the fastest 5K XC time ever run by a Central Oregon prep runner. It is the fastest time in the state of Oregon this season by 18 seconds. It’s a new Summit record and the second fastest time by an Oregon runner since 2005.
    • 17:53 – Megan Fristoe’s time @ Harrier Classic. The fastest of any Oregon girl this season. A new Summit record. Very few prep girls ever go under 18 minutes in a 5K.
    • 18:09 – Ashley Maton’s time @ Harrier Classic. 3rd fastest among all girls in Oregon this year.
    • 15:38.6 – Eric Alldritt’s time @ Harrier Classic, the 4th fastest of any Oregon boy.

Ranking of Oregon Girls so Far (2,440 total):

The problem with having three of the top teams in the state in one league is that only two of them can qualify for state. That means a deserving team in Bend is going to get left out.

Take a look @ the Summit Girls cross country team time trials time from 2011 vs 2010. Remember that they won state in 2010… and they look much faster in 2011. They had five runner this year break the time-trial record!

10 big September sports events in Central Oregon

    COA,Feature — Tags: , , , , , , , , — Josh Cordell @ 12:44 pm

(There are some good high school road games, like Mountain View football @ Sherwood… but these are all IN Central Oregon).

Desert Brawl (9/10) – Always a good time and this year it’s @ The Century Center, one of my favorite places in town. Plus, the main event is two guys who really want to punch each other in the face!

South Salem @ Mountain View football (9/23). South Salem reached the Class 6A semifinals @ state last year, so they are the real deal. This should be the highest quality prep football game in Central Oregon for the entire month of September. Good stuff!

Ducks vs Gonzaga Cross County (9/10) in Sunriver. It’s not often you get to see college sports in Central Oregon, let alone Division 1, and on top of that a National power like Oregon XC.

Jefferson @ Bend High football (9/9). Jefferson was a state quarterfinalist last year, losing to eventual champion Sherwood. One of the best games in C.O. no doubt!

Bend vs Summit girls soccer (9/29) under the lights on the turf @ Summit High School. A rematch of last year’s Class 5A quarterfinals (Summit won 6-2 en route to winning state). The two teams have combined to win the past three state championships and four out of five 5A state titles since reclassification.

Bend @ Redmond football (9/30) in the oldest Central Oregon rivalry. Bend leads the series 71-40-3. Think about that for a second, that is 114 games! Football teams typically play each other once a year. To put it into perspective, Bend leads Mountain View 15-14 in their series. MV opened in 1978 and the two team have played each other 29 times.

USA Cycling National Championships (8/31-9-4) Masters Road. Guess what… a huge cycling event in Bend! CO has become a cycling destination for the USA.

Mountain View Volleyball Tournament (9/10). With Mountain View and Summit you have two of the best 5A teams in the state. If Crook County and Sisters are there that adds two of the best 4A teams in the state.

Sunrise to Summit (9/3). The race up Mount Bachelor is always a great one.

Big Foot Run (9/11) one of the fastest 10Ks around! Always lots of great runners involved in this fundraiser for local prep XC teams.

Four C.O. prep stars to watch this Fall

So many great prep athletes here in Central Oregon. Here are four who you pay close attention to this Fall.
    Girls
    Megan Fristoe 12
    • Summit Cross County
    • Two-time reigning state XC champion.
    • The Summit girls cross country team is pre-season Nationally ranked 24th and going for their fourth-straight state team title.
    • View her “Athlete Profile”

    Piper McDonald 9
    Summit Cross County
    • An incredibly talented freshman on an already loaded team.
    • She’s been one of Central Oregon’s best runners since she was a tween… now she gets her shot at prep XC.
    • View her “Athlete Profile”

    Boys
    Joel Skotte 12
    Mountain View Football
    • 2010 IMC defensive player of the year.
    • Has committed to Oregon State University.
    • When people talk about Skotte the word you hear a lot, and rightfully so, is “beast.” With him carrying the ball more on offense this season, the beast will be even more fun to watch then last year when he was a defensive wrecking crew! Don’t expect the defense to let up either, he’ll still be running around the field like a wild man no doubt.
    • View his “Athlete Profile”

    Travis Neuman 11
    Summit Cross County
    • 2nd @ 2010 State XC meet.
    • Top returning runner in Class 5A.
    • No Summit boys has ever won an individual state XC championship (older brother Kenyon took 2nd in 2004 – 15:46).
    • Travis could join an elite group of past Individual State XC Champions. No Central Oregon boy has won state since Bend’s Lane Neely won the then big-school 4A in 2000 with a time of 15:35.
    • View his “Athlete Profile”

Summit girls XC preseason top-25 in the USA

    “Marc Bloom’s 2011 Super 25 High School”

The three-time defending state-champion Storm may have their best team ever with – Megan Fristoe (two-time defending state champion), Ashley Maton, Sara Fristoe, Kira Kelly, Brit Oliphant, and freshman Piper McDonald among the front runners.
