After wrapping up an impressive cross country running career @ Summit, senior Pat Madden is in the middle of another successful nordic ski racing season (where he is the reigning state champion). The third-generation Bend native took sometime to answer a few questions for Central Oregon Athlete:
Central Oregon Athlete – Were you born in Bend?
Pat Madden – Yes. I have lived in Bend my whole life and am a third generation Bendite. My grandpa was born here in 1918 and still comes to all my running races.
COA – What’s the best part about XC running?
PM – The best part of xc is definitely the team. All four years there were great people on the team. Also going to seaside is really fun I have some great memories from going to seaside and only one scar.
COA – What are you XC skiing goals?
PM – This season in skiing I hope to repeat as state high school champion and also help summit win another state title. Skiing with the Bend Endurance Academy, I hope to ski in the top three in at least two of the junior national races in March.
COA – Do you know what you are doing next year?
PM – To be honest, I have absolutely no idea what i am doing next year. I just finished all my applications this last week, but am still undecided. I am trying to decide whether i’m going to run or ski or do both and I kind of need to make this decision before i decide where i’m going to go.
COA – What is your favorite workout in Central Oregon?
PM – I have alot so i’m going to break them up by sport. For skiing my favorite is doing 30 30′s up cry baby hill at Meissner ski area. For running I love the Tumalo Falls trails, but I have to go with 1000 repeats in Juniper park with the boys. Also in the spring you can’t beat doing 400 repeats on the track over the steeplechase barriers with coach Davis.
COA – Anything else to add?
PM – Love the website, its a great idea. And I want to say thanks to all my coaches who have made me what i am especially Ben Husaby and Dave Clark.
