Crook County vs Sisters in the first round of volleyball… whoops!

    COA — Tags: , , , , , , — Josh Cordell @ 6:16 am

Crook County plays Sisters in the first round of the Class 4A state volleyball playoffs. The problem with that is that power rankings were supposed to separate the best teams. That didn’t happen this time. Let’s take a look at the two teams:

    Sisters
    • 2009 4A State Champions
    • 22-9 overall record in 2010

    Crook County
    • 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006 5A State Champions
    • 15-9 overall record in 2010
    • Crook County’s losses are to: Sunset, Redmond, Clackamas, Jesuit, Central Catholic, Summit, Mountain View, Central Catholic and Jesuit again. Can you say an insane schedule!

Sisters senior Taylor Steele just won a district cross country title and now he’s gunning for an individual state title. He slowed down just long enough to answer a few questions for Central Oregon Athlete:

Central Oregon Athlete – How long have you lived in Sisters?
Taylor Steele – About 9 years.

COA – Do you play any sports other than Cross Country?
TS – Track and I played basketball until this year I am doing indoor track. I also have a passion for soccer, rock climbing, skiing and snowboarding.

COA – What do you like to do when you aren’t running?
TS – Studying and hanging out with friends. I am also in to sports photography.

COA – Tell me about winning the conference championship?
TS – Winning Sky-em was important for the upcoming state meet. But it was a good experience to see all my hard work during the summer pay off. But i really hope i can carry on and do well at state. A disappointment was the team not making it to state.

COA – Any goals for the state meet?
TS – I really want to win but who doesn’t want to win. I really think that I have the possibility to be in the top 2 or 3. But I really want to make it to Border Clash I was a bubble runner last year. But I would like to make a statement and become the first Outlaw to win the title.

COA – How long have you been racing?
TS – I started racing in 8th grade

COA – What has been the highlight of your running career so far?
TS – Last year making the state meet in track and accomplishing so pretty good times. But more importantly watching hard work pay off every year just watching my times get lower and lower.

COA – Do you have a favorite course?
TS – I really like the district and state courses.

COA – What is your favorite workout in Central Oregon?
TS – I really like running the old dirty half trail and the Peterson ridge trail system. Biking Peterson ridge is also fun. There are also many bouldering areas around sisters that are fun to climb on.

COA – Anything else to add?
TS – Every runner should try and go to steens mountain running camp. Its a life changing experience.

    Kellie Foley

Keliie Foley missed the 2009 cross country season due to an injury. Despite not running as a junior, the Crook County senior has had an amazing prep XC career. Here highlights include: winning the 2008 5A state championship and along with her older sisters the Foley girls took 1-2-3 at the 2007 Intermountain Conference district meet. The 2008 5A state champion and is now running in Class 4A after Crook County moved down a classification.

Kellie answered a few questions for Central Oregon Athlete:

Central Oregon Athlete – How long have your been running competitively?
Kellie Foley - Really competitive about 6 years since sixth grade.

COA – What got you into racing?
KF – My family and the sense of accomplishment when you finish the race.

COA – What was it like having your sisters on the team with you?
KF – I really enjoyed it especially when both my sisters were on the team.

COA – How cool was it to have a family sweep of the district meet and do you still talk about it with your sisters?
KF – It was really memorable because it’ll never happen again.

COA – What was your injury last season?
KF – I tore my plantar facia on my right foot.

COA – How do you feel now?
KF – Very good, and excited for the meets because my training is going very well.

COA – What are some of your goals for the season?
KF – PR in the 5k, and choose a college that I will enjoy running at.

COA – What has been the highlight of your running career so far?
KF – The highlight was when I got 3rd at Borderclash my sophomore year, and when my sisters and I swept the district meet.

COA – What do you like to do when you aren’t running?
KF – I like to go to church and be outdoors.

COA – What is your favorite workout in Central Oregon?
KF – I enjoy doing long runs when I can see more scenery.

    2010 Oregon prep volleyball preview

Central Catholic will be looking to become the first school to repeat as the big-school state volleyball champion in Oregon since Gresham did back in 2001-2002. Central Catholic won the 2009 Class 6A title, their first since they had won the then 4A title in 2000.

Since Oregon moved to six classifications in 2006, Crook County has won all four Class 5A state volleyball titles. The good news for the rest of 5A is that in 2010 Crook County is moving to Class 4A. This move means a lot for Central Oregon schools. Sisters is the reigning 4A champions and will have to now deal with the Cowgirls. The Crook County move is good news for the Bend schools. Crook County beat Summit in the state finals in 2009 and 2007. Crook County beat Mountain View in the finals in 2008 and 2006.

    2009 State champions:
    6A – Central Catholic
    5A – Crook County
    4A – Sisters
    3A – Santiam Christian
    2A – Blanchet Catholic
    1A – Imbler
