Favorite Blazer starting 5

UPDATE (1/16/10) – The Blazers have used even more starting lineups than I could have ever imagined coming into this season. Who would have guessed that Portland would have great success, beating Orlando last night, with this lineup:
G Andre Miller
G Jerryd Bayless
F Juwan Howard
F LaMarcus Aldridge
F Martell Webster

————————————-

I’ve been a Portland Trailblazer fan for as long as I can remember liking sports. I wasn’t alive with the Blazers won the championship in 1976, so I’m not going to include that lineup in my list of favorite starting 5s.

I’ve got a favorite for sure, no doubt in my mind it’s the lineup of:
PG Terry Porter
SG Clyde Drexler
C Kevin Duckworth
SF Jerome Kersey
PF Buck Williams

The lineup I’d like to see right now:
PG Brandon Roy
SG Rudy Fernandez
C Greg Oden
SF Nicolas Batum
PF LaMarcus Aldridge

Another great lineup:
2000
PG Damon Stoudamire
SG Steve Smith
C Arvydas Sabonis
SF Scottie Pippen
PF Rasheed Wallace

Those are all starting line-ups. The best is definitely Porter, Drexler, Duckworth, Kersey, Williams line-up. I’ve been watching re-runs of the early 90’s games a lot lately on Comcast Sports Net in Portland. They’ve been re-running the old Blazers vs. Bulls NBA Finals games – those guys were very good.

I disagree with bringing Rudy into the starting line-up now though. I like that as a 4th quarter line-up (possibly moving Batum out), but I think we still need Rudy to come off the bench late in the 1st to provide a spark for the 2nd unit, especially with Outlaw injured. I also don’t like Roy running the point to start the game – like him working off the ball to start and then handling the ball late. Our current starting line-up is playing very well with Martell @ SF, but I can’t wait to have Batum’s defense back.

BTW, I meant to start my last comment by saying, “those are all GREAT starting line-ups.” Ha!

  4. Garrett Wasson Says:

The old school line-up was the best ever,They battled the Champion Bulls and held there own.I like our team now though, these young guys are improving every game. Our bench is so deep,we can start a lot of different ways depending on who we are playing,so that right there is a blessing.
    GO BLAZERS……AND….HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!

  5. Rachael Says:

I’m curious why you chose the current five that you did. Interesting to put Brandon at PG and start Rudy. I imagine that the Sarge considered a lot of options, so why would he choose to pass this one over?

  6. Josh Cordell Says:

Bryan is probably right about having some scoring bunch off the bench. i just think that the best 5 blazers on the floor would be Roy, Fernandez, Batum, Aldridge and Oden. Big and athletic!

  7. Jordan Says:

I like the 2000 lineup but with bonzi instead of steve smith: the jail blazers before they were the jail blazers. maybe even replace smith with J.R. Rider ha

  8. Josh Cordell Says:

OK, maybe now I have to add Bayless in there. What a great game he had last night!

  9. Blzer Says:

    PG – Telfair
    SG – Stoudamire
    SF – Darius Miles
    PF – Detlef Scrempf
    C – Dale Davis

  10. Josh Cordell Says:

how about this for the dream lineup:

    PG – Damon Stoudamire
    SG – Brandon Roy
    SF – Clyde Drexler
    PF – Bill Walton
    C – Sabonis

  11. Hoops1a Says:

    Combining eras, I’ll go with:

    PG – TP
    SG – Roy
    SF – Drexler
    PF – LaMarcus
    C – Walton

    Bench would include:

    C – Sabonis
PF – Sheed – assuming he’d come off the bench for me (my guess is he would cuss me out and punch me in the face when I told him he was sitting behind Aldridge
    SF – Pippen
    SF – Kersey
PF/C – Mo Lucas – he was a bad dude fellas. An absolute beast and a good player too. Not just an enforcer but a proficient scorer and rebounder.
    PG – Dave Twardzik
SF – Vandeweigh – deadly shooter and scorer
    G – Geoff Petrie

That leaves me with 12 guys after Sheed punches me out and is released…

  12. Casey Says:

I think Brian Grant should be added in there –

    G – Porter
    G – Drexler
    F – Kersey
    F – Grant
    C – Sheed/Sabonis

  13. Josh Cordell Says:

Rachael, i think that putting Roy, Fernandez and Batum all in the starting lineup would just make Portland so long and hard to matchup with.
