When the OSAA elected to expand from four to six classifications three years ago, many schools and leagues found improved success. But perhaps none more so than the Intermountain Conference girls fall sports teams have found in Class 5A.
IMC girls’ teams have won six out of a possible nine state championships since the reclassification. Compare that to zero state champions ever in two of the three fall sports and just one in the past 10 years in the other before the reclassification.
No IMC girls team had ever won a state title in either soccer or volleyball before moving to Class 5A. Now the IMC has won five out of six in those sports.
Always known as a cross county power across the state, the IMC’s Bend high won six-straight state titles in the 90s and Bend’s Mountain View won the title in 2000. So it’s not surprising that the IMC has the reigning state cross county champions in Summit and has brought home five out of a possible six team trophies in three years.
The playoffs begin today and three Central Oregon school’s well be trying to defend their state titles; Crook County is looking for its fourth volleyball title in a row, but they’ll have to get through Summit and Mountain View to do it. Bend is trying for its third state title in four years, but they have to hold off Summit and Mountain View as well. And in cross county Summit is going for a second-straight title. Their biggest competition… you may have guessed it, Bend High. And you could through Mountain View into the cross county mixed if they had been able to make it to state out of the ultra competitive IMC.
