Magic & Bird

I just watched the HBO documentary “Magic & Bird: A Courtship of Rivals” and it was amazing! If you are a sports fan, especially an NBA fan, then this movie is a must. But the truth is, this is about so much more than sports. It’s about how we view people, how we view the world and most importantly, it’s about friendship. Which let’s be honest, that is what sports is about for a lot of us.

This may sound crazy but I literally teared up at one point, and it was because of all things… a pass thrown by Larry Bird. The night after Magic retired because of contracting H.I.V. Larry Legend through a behind-the-back pass from half court to Reggie Lewis (a super sick pass by the way) that was clearly a tribute to his good friend Earvin. Maybe the most powerful pass ever.

Anyway, if you get a chance to watch it… do it!

A great place to watch a game in Bend

Brother Jon’s Public House on Galveston is a great place to watch sports and eat some delish food! I was sitting in front of three TVs there watching NBA, golf and a snowboard video… pretty hard to beat!

Props to the Racquet Shoppe

I stopped by the racquet shoppe in Bend today to order a few cases of tennis balls and I have to say then in my 10 plus years of teaching/coaching tennis and putting on tournaments I’ve never had an easier experience than I did today. Walked in and out with five cases of balls in less than five minutes. Amazing! Also, while I was there I noticed a shoe sale that had some really good deals, so if you need new tennis shoes I’d swing by there @ 542 NW Arizona Ave.

“Best Easy Day Hikes Bend and Central Oregon”

I just picked up “Best Easy Day Hikes, Bend and Central Oregon.” It’s an awesome little pocket book and a really good resource. The Falcom Guides book by Portland’s Lizann Dunegan.

Among the hikes included are: The River Trail, Shevlin Park Loop, Fall River, Osprey Point, Green Lakes, Lava Lands Visitor Center Trails, Paulina Lake Loop and many others.

It’s a great way to get started and has lots of valuable information.

You want your personal trainer to look good, the same way you’d rather have your financial planner pull up in a nice car instead of get off the bus. When Rick Cummings asked me about my goals I said, “Pretty much looking like you.” Cummings is in great shape and clearly practices what he preaches. In the two workouts I’ve had with him so far he’s opened my eyes to so much about nutrition, weight training and overall fitness that it’s hard to believe it’s only been two meetings.

Rick and his wife Erin are both personal trainers @ Snap Fitness in Bend, where Erin teaches a wide variety of fitness classes.

I’ve been active my whole life, an athlete on and off, but have never worked with a personal trainer before. Working with Rick has made me realized that I pretty much had no idea what I was doing. He’s been able to push me in a way that I’ve never been pushed in the gym before. When your main sports have been tennis and distance running it’s easy to have a mentality of “lifting weights is something I do every once in a while, but I don’t want to get too sore.” Having someone push you and teach you the correct way to lift is so much more rewarding!

I’d recommend Rick for the following reasons:
• He’s knowledgeable and clearly lives what he is teaching.
• Inspiring and has a great ability to push you.
• Is a fun person to hangout with, which helps if you are going to be spending painful moments together

I attended a high school tennis coaches clinic in Portland this weekend and in the process I won a free pair of tennis shoes from Players Racquet Shop in Beaverton. So thanks Players! If you are in the Portland area, I highly recommend you swing by their shop, it has a great selection.
