GREAT PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN BEND GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB AND BEND SENIOR HIGH GOLF TEAMS
Bend Senior High golf teams and Bend Golf and Country Club have had a fulfilling relationship for many years. With the use of the club’s varied practice facilities and championship-caliber course, BSH has produced state championship teams and individuals. In the past decade alone, BSH and Bend Golf and Country Club have produced an incredible list of collegiate players, including Amy Mombert, Brad Mombert, Lindsay Eide, Chad Cocco, Lisa Schmidt, Cory Schmidt, Natalie Weber, Joel Salmond, and Andrew Vijarro.
That successful effort continues into a new decade. The mild winter has allowed Bend Golf and Country Club to open for play much earlier than some other local facilities, which translates to a great head start for the Lava Bears squad. However, the life of a golf team member is not just qualifying rounds and hours spent refining swings on the driving range. These pictures illustrate that BSH golf teams expect to make a contribution to the care of the golf course and it’s future. In only a couple of hours, players cleaned up native areas and readied sand bunkers for spring play. In the weeks to come, both the boy’s and girl’s team will host their respective invitationals at the historic course. In years to come, the lessons learned from this partnership will benefit both Bend Golf and Country Club and the excellence of the Bend Lava Bears golf program.

I’ve been coach spring high school sports in Bend, Oregon for the past 10 years and today was the nicest first day of the season that I can remember. Sure it may snow later this week, it is Central Oregon after all, but today was amazing.
So how was your first day of practice?

I just got back from Desert Brawl 38 at the Bend Event Center. What’s funny is that I have one word that sums up the event and it might surprise you. When you hear terms like “cage fighting” or “mixed martial arts” a lot of different things might come to mind. But the word that sums up the night for me is “sportsmanship.”
It was a packed house with a sell out crowd at the Bend Event Center. The night was full of exciting fights with great action, plenty of choke holds and punches and kicks to the face. But what was impressive to me was the way every fight ended, with the fighters hugging and exchanging pleasantries. It was honestly a lesson that a lot of other athletes could learn from. When you are competing, give it your all and “battle.” But when it’s over, treat each other with respect. Heck, if you can get punched in the face by someone and then be friends with them a few minutes later, then no matter what sport you are playing you can learn to “leave it on the field.”

Pendleton beat Hermiston last night, which helps the causes of Summit, Madras and Bend. The Intermountain Conference boys basketball race is coming down to the wire.
Madras (5-7) @ THE DALLES-WAHTONKA (8-4) 7:00pm – A must win for the White Buffaloes, especially with the likely win by Summit tonight. A loss could knock them out of the playoff hunt.
Mountain View (11-1) @ BEND (5-7) 7:30pm – MV has clinched the IMC titles. A win by Bend would be one of the biggest in Civil War history. The Cougars have a 7-game win streak going.
Crook County (0-12) @ SUMMIT (6-6) 7:30pm – A Storm win gives them

A friend just called me to tell me how awesome the winter biathlon was that he had just watched on TV. I’m excited, because I think the NBC coverage of the winter biathlon at the Olympics has been awesome and I’d love to see the sport grow. I’ve always been a big fan because it’s such a unique sport and I really feel like people don’t realize how “cool” it is.
My older brother Sam Cordell is a former national champion in the sport, so I’ve grown up watching it and thinking, “If people only knew how awesome this is!”
It’ll be interesting to see if the coverage of biathlon from the games will help grow the sport.
