So many great prep athletes here in Central Oregon. Here are four who you pay close attention to this Fall. Girls Megan Fristoe 12

• Two-time reigning state XC champion.
• The Summit girls cross country team is pre-season Nationally ranked 24th and going for their fourth-straight state team title.

Boys Joel Skotte 12
Mountain View Football
• 2010 IMC defensive player of the year.
• Has committed to Oregon State University.
• When people talk about Skotte the word you hear a lot, and rightfully so, is “beast.” With him carrying the ball more on offense this season, the beast will be even more fun to watch then last year when he was a defensive wrecking crew! Don’t expect the defense to let up either, he’ll still be running around the field like a wild man no doubt.

Travis Neuman 11
Summit Cross County
• 2nd @ 2010 State XC meet.
• Top returning runner in Class 5A.
• No Summit boys has ever won an individual state XC championship (older brother Kenyon took 2nd in 2004 – 15:46).
• Travis could join an elite group of past Individual State XC Champions. No Central Oregon boy has won state since Bend’s Lane Neely won the then big-school 4A in 2000 with a time of 15:35.

Some of what makes Central Oregon so great is the combo – sports/recreation/healthy living/variety of activity/community through sport. Because of those things, C.O. is an amazing place to live. So get involved and help support school sports here in Central Oregon.
Here’s how you can support • Attend a high school sporting event (or a bunch of them) - Friday night prep football is one of the best shows around. One of my personal favorites is to watch prep cross country races, especially in Drake Park! Try branching out and going to a high school game you’ve never been to before, like a volleyball match. The $3-5 you pay to get in the door is well worth the entertainment and every penny helps the teams. • Buy what teams are selling – Coupon books, team t-shirts, or banners advertising your business… your financial help makes it possible for these young people to play. The Mountain View football card is a great deal right now! • Be a mentor – Every athlete, and person for that matter, needs a mentor. Checkout my article “Up, Over and Down for a healthy sports life” to see what I mean. • Coach – Teams alway need volunteer coaches @ the high school and middle school level. Why not get involved? • Stay aware of what’s going on – The more you invest in something, the more you get out of it. If you follow the scores, stories and kids… then you’ll really enjoy high school sports. • Take your child to see the “big kids” play – Seeing older kids play the sport that a young child enjoys can build their love for the sport. If you’ve got a little soccer player, get them to a high school game and ask them, “Does that look like fun to you?”
